Family Fishing Fun
Capt. Justin Leake takes his wife Angie and sons Austin (7) and Jaxon (5) in search of mahi mahi in the Gulf of Mexico off Panama City Beach. Angie explains why safety and "making it fun" are keys to positive fishing experiences for young children. Justin describes how mahi mahi (dolphin) is a great species for kid fishing because they are eager to bite, put up a good fight, are brightly colored and tasty to eat. Justin and Angie give their sons a lesson in conservation by having them participate in deciding how many fish to keep and how many to release. Justin and his cousin Brent Berry chase redfish along the beach and catch one after another using soft plastic baits with lead heads. Justin explains how he modifies plastic baits to minimize stress to the fish and ensure healthy releases.
